The Lord’s Day (February 14)
Our class is a twelve week video featuring Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters, professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson MS and teaching elder in the Mississippi Valley Presbytery (PCA). He’s written several books, including several on justification. The twelve week course is entitled, “The Life and Theology of Paul.”
Class # 11: The Church and the Christian Life. That we are delivered from the guilt, penalty, and dominion of sin in our justification and sanctification, respectively, makes the gospel very personal to us all. Yet personal does not mean individualistic. The gospel gathers people into a community of fellow believers, the church of Jesus Christ. We are called to live as believers corporately—not in isolation from one another. After all, Paul more often than not writes his letters to churches, gives commands to believers existing together, and continually uses “one another” language to speak of our relationships with fellow believers. In this lesson, Dr. Waters wants us to think of the church particularly in connection to the Christian life. In the process, he examines Paul’s understanding of the church as a body, gifts within the church, and Christ as the head of the church.
The next three episodes (Acts 4:32-5:11) describes how the church shared their belongings and serves as an introduction to Barnabas. We’ll take each in turn beginning with 4:32-35, “Testimony in Word and Deed”.
Following on the heels of lust and adultery is divorce, always a touchy subject. In two verses, Jesus has given us much to ponder and consider about the marriage relationship and its unfortunate consequence, divorce. We’ll look at Matthew 5:31-32, “A Certificate of Divorce”.
Join us for prayer each Wednesday evening from 7-8 pm. Please send Pastor Chris any requests that you would like us to pray for.
Please join us and tell others about our three week study, “The Intimate Marriage” featuring a video series by Dr. R.C. Sproul. Fliers have been sent via email attachment and some are available at the church. Our three week study continues the next two Friday evenings, February 12, and 19 beginning at 6:30 pm with dinner. We’ll have food and fellowship along with discussion. Single adults are invited to participate with us. Childcare will be provided.
The men will meet on Saturday, February 13 at 8 am for study and breakfast. Read The Practice of Godliness chapter 6 (“Humility”) and bring something to share for breakfast.
The session thanks all members who participated in the town hall meeting. We will discuss the feedback at our next meeting on February 16.
All College and Career aged members are invited to a ski weekend in West Virginia on February 12-14. Fliers are available at the church. The host is Pastor Jonathan Hutchison of Reformation OPC in Morgantown. You can join other folks similar in age for a fun-filled skiing weekend. There is some cost for lift ticket and ski rental, but the church will provide room and board.
