Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of December 28-January 3, 2016.
If you have a prayer request, please forward it to Pastor Chris to be included in the congregational prayer on Sunday morning or evening.
The Lord’s Day (January 3)
Our class is a twelve week video featuring Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters, professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson MS and teaching elder in the Mississippi Valley Presbytery (PCA). He’s written several books, including several on justification. The twelve week course is entitled, “The Life and Theology of Paul.”
Class # 6: Justification (Part 1). In this lesson and the next, we will explore the doctrine of justification, which Dr. Waters calls “the crown jewel of the gospel of Jesus Christ that Paul preached.” Likewise, Calvin labeled it “the main hinge on which religion turns,” while Luther claimed, “if the article of justification is lost, all Christian doctrine is lost at the same time.” We will begin at Romans 3:21, which reads, “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law.” Once sinners see the need for the righteousness of God, that gift can be presented to them. As Martyn Lloyd Jones has said of the beginning of this verse, “there are no more wonderful words in the whole of Scripture than these two words—‘but now.’”
There are two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum, Show Me Jesus.
We return to our study of Acts. Looking at Peter’s sermon specifically, we’ll read Acts 2:14-36 with the title “This Is That.” In weeks ahead, we’ll examine the crowds’ response and the ending summary statement.
Our evening worship will be at 2 pm, following our fellowship lunch. We’ll go back to the Sermon on the Mount, looking at Matthew 5:7-9, “Not American Values.”
The prayer meeting for December 30 is canceled. Join us again for prayer on January 6, 2016 at 7 pm.
Lobby beautification: The Deacons request volunteers to form a “decorating committee” for the lobby. The committee will have a modest budget to purchase some materials or supplies. The goal is to foster fellowship and make the area welcoming.
The women meet for Bible study each week to study the Gospel of Matthew. Contact Ananda Pienaar for time and place.
For all members who missed the Congregational Meeting, you may see Deacon Luke Denny for a copy of the proposed budget; there were no questions about it during our review. The session is set to approve it at their January meeting. One item of importance is that Elder Robert Taylor will have mandatory one year sabbatical as per our By-Laws. Although he remains ordained as an elder, he will be relieved of his duties for a year.
Our next monthly fellowship lunch is Sunday, January 3 immediately after the service. The theme is comfort foods.
The next Men's breakfast and study is Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 8 am.
Pastor Chris is on vacation from December 25 through January 1.
