14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:14-15)
A Call to Prayer (Wednesday, October 29, 2014; 7 pm)
Join us for an hour of prayer this and every Wednesday evening from 7-8 pm. This is a good chance to minister to one another in love through prayer. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to Pastor Chris by Wednesday afternoon to be included in the prayer meeting.
The Lord’s Day (November 2, 2014)
Deacon Brian Hopson continues a study on the Book of Ecclesiastes.
On November 23, Mr. Chris Crandall will give his testimony and sense of call and teach on praying in faith. The following week, November 30, Mr. Marius Pienaar will give his testimony and sense of call and teach on Covenant Theology. Both of these men have been nominated for elder and are currently in a training class.
There are two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum.
There is an Inquirer’s Class for anyone desiring to know more about Good Shepherd – who we are, what we believe, how we worship, etc. Covenant children interested in making a profession of faith are welcome.
For preparation to hear God’s Word:
WLC 160 What is required of those that hear the word preached?
A. It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer; examine what they hear by the scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the word of God; meditate, and confer of it; hide it in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives.
In the previous section, Jude pressed home the subjective nature of the false teacher’s revelation. They had words to share, but they were not words from God. In the few verses we’ll examine this week, we’ll see how believing a false word leads to an immoral lifestyle. More importantly, we’ll see a connection between the false teacher’s lack of real authority and the false words they speak. It may be helpful to you to review Genesis 4 (Cain), Numbers 16 (Korah), and Numbers 22-25 (Balaam), all of whom Jude uses are examples. The title is “All Sizzle, No Steak” from Jude 11-13. The Old Testament lesson is Leviticus 20:10-27.
Having completed a brief study of the Ten Commandments, the Shorter Catechism recognizes man’s problem by asking the obvious question, “Can any man keep these commands?” Although no one can keep God’s commandments, is everyone as sinful as possible? Put another way, are some sins worse than others? We’ll explore the Bible’s answer to this question under the title, “Aggravated Sin” from Matthew 11:20-24.
WSC 83 Are all transgressions of the law equally heinous?
A. Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others.
Wednesday Prayer at 7 PM, each Wednesday.
Evening Lord’s Day worship each Sunday evening at 6 PM. If you have a hymn or psalm request, please send it to me for our hymn sing.
Officer Training continues on Tuesday, October 28 at 7 p. m. at the Crandall’s house. All of the men of the church are invited to attend the ten week course.
On October 31 from 6:00-8:00 p. m. we will host a Harvest party for the community. We will have the party overlapping with the Trick-or-Treat time with the intention of drawing in community members. We will have some games, light food, and candy treats for all. Please sign up on the sheet posted in the lobby. Each family is asked to bring in two bags of candy for the children’s treat bags.
The next fellowship lunch is Sunday, November 2, immediately after morning worship. The first Sunday is a good time to invite a friend and have him or her remain for lunch.
Remember to “Fall Back” one hour Saturday evening – set your clocks back an hour from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time.
The Women's Bible Study is every Tuesday at 10 a. m. at the church. All women are welcome.
The Men’s Study and Breakfast will have their next meeting on Saturday, November 8, at 8 a. m. at the Tri-County Panera Bread. We will cover chapter 11 “Men in Friendship” from The Masculine Mandate. All men are invited.
Pastor Chris is teaching an eight week Inquirer's Class beginning Sunday September 7 and running through October 26. We’ll meet during the Sunday School hour. If you would like to learn more about the church, being Reformed, our doctrine and practices, please join us for the class. Although it is a precursor to membership, one need not be interested in membership to come.
