Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of June 23-29, 2014.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:3-12).

A Call to Prayer (Wednesday, June 25, 2014; 7 pm)

Join us for an hour of prayer this and every Wednesday evening from 7-8 pm. This is a terrific chance to minister to one another in love through prayer. We have changed the format slightly to include more singing. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to Pastor Chris by Wednesday afternoon to be included in the prayer meeting.

The Lord’s Day (June 29, 2014)

Sunday School

This week we begin a new twelve week video series by R. C. Sproul, “What Did Jesus Do?” (not to be confused with WWJD). From the Ligonier website regarding this series:

When Jesus approached John the Baptist to be baptized, John initially objected. But Jesus responded by saying that it was necessary “to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matt. 3:15) Why was this act—and others like it—so important? Most Christians understand the importance of Christ’s atoning sacrifice and the significance of his resurrection. But how many comprehend the significance of the life Jesus led prior to the crowning weeks of the passion? In this teaching series, R.C. Sproul uncovers what it means for Christ to be the “second Adam”—and what this means for believers today.

There are also two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum.

Morning Worship

For preparation to hear God’s Word: What is required of those that hear the word preached? A. It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer; examine what they hear by the scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the word of God; meditate, and confer of it; hide it in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives (WLC 160).

We move to the second part in the series “Identifying and Responding to False Teachers” based on 2 Peter and Jude. We will examine 2 Peter 1:3-11 under the title “Assurance of faith.” The Old Testament lesson is Leviticus 8.

Evening Worship

This week we move into the second section of the Westminster Shorter Catechism which begins with an exposition of the Ten Commandments. To prepare us for that part of the study, we will gather and study questions 39-42, which introduce the Ten Commandments. This week our passage is Matthew 22:34-40 under the title, Obeying God’s Revealed Will. The WSC questions and answers are as follows: WSC 39 What is the duty which God requireth of man? A. The duty which God requireth of man, is obedience to his revealed will. WSC 40 What did God at first reveal to man for the rule of his obedience? A. The rule which God at first revealed to man for his obedience, was the moral law. WSC 41 Where is the moral law summarily comprehended? A. The moral law is summarily comprehended in the Ten Commandments. WSC 42 What is the sum of the Ten Commandments? A. The sum of the Ten Commandments is, To love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and our neighbor as ourselves.

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of June 9-15, 2014.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of June 2-8, 2014.

Thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah, and he did what was good and right and faithful before the LORD his God. And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God and in accordance with the law and the commandments, seeking his God, he did with all his heart, and prospered (2 Chronicles 31:20-21).

A Call to Prayer (Wednesday, June 4, 2014; 7 pm)

The Lord’s Day (June 8, 2014)

Sunday School

This week we continue our adult Sunday School class using a video curriculum. The class is called, “Faith of our Fathers: Why Creeds and Confessions?” taught by Ken Gentry. The video is about 25 minutes long and discussion will follow. A complementary book is Carl Trueman’s, The Creedal Imperative. Here is a blurb from the video:

In this series, Dr. Gentry explains the point of creeds for those not familiar with their rationale. He also defends their biblical warrant and practical usefulness. This study should prove valuable for both sides of the issue: It should help creedalists understand why the use creeds. It should better instruct anti-creedalists in the position so that they might properly evaluate the evidence.

There are also two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum.

Morning Worship

As you prepare for worship, please pray for me as I prepare both the liturgy and the sermon. Also, take some time to prepare yourself to receive the Lord’s Supper (if applicable). We finish our study of 1 Peter this week, focusing on 1 Peter 5:12-14, Final Greetings. I like the beginnings and endings of New Testament epistles because of their humanity. It is easy enough to abstract and theologize our New Testament, forgetting that real believers in the first century read these letters for their correction and edification. In our concluding passage, we meet some well-known New Testament figures. The Old Testament lesson is Leviticus 5.

As we move into the summer, we’ll continue our evening service study of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. My prayer is that this is helpful to you, even if you are familiar with the Shorter Catechism. Refresher course may shed new light on old subjects. In the mornings, we’ll move into 2 Peter, which is only three chapters. Most likely, we’ll finish 2 Peter by summer’s end.

Evening Worship

In worship, we will sing Give Praise to God by James Boice and any requests that you might forward to me. Remember that we are spending a few moments confessing our sins as part of our pastoral prayer. We are nearing the end of section one of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, questions 1-39, ‘What You are to believe concerning God.’ Q. 37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at death? A. The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory; and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves till the resurrection. The title is ‘Absent from the Body’ and the Scripture is Luke 23:43.

Announcements

Wednesday Prayer at 7 PM, each Wednesday. Please forward any requests so that we might include them in our prayers.

Evening Lord’s Day worship each Sunday evening at 6 PM. If you have a hymn or psalm request, please advance it to me for our hymn sing.

Regarding last week’s presbytery meeting, the presbytery has approved Covenant OPC Mansfield’s call to the Rev. Matthew Judd and disposed of the other items.
