Here are the Good Shepherd OPC announcements for August 27 - September 2, 2018.
The Lord’s Day (September 2)
We begin a study of our religious identity. Who are we Orthodox Presbyterians? Do you even consider yourself by this identity? In the Fall Quarter, we’ll consider the history of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Lesson # 1: The History and Identity of the OPC
The children have two classes that use Great Commission Publications curriculum.
1 Samuel 1:1-20, A Fellowship of Barrenness
Romans 15:14-33, The Gospel Heard Round the World
Join us for Sunday evening worship at 2:00 pm.
There will be no home group meeting on August 29. We’ll resume our Bible study at the church on September 5.
The session and the deacons have a joint, called meeting on August 28 at 7:00 pm.
The next fellowship lunch is Sunday, September 2 after the morning worship. The food theme is ribs with the appropriate sides. Make your best ribs - with rub, with sauce, smoked, whatever. If you’re not inclined to ribs, bring a side dish or dessert to share. At the next dinner, we will attempt to categorize our food for those who suffer from allergies. If you happen to make something that is gluten free, dairy free, free of both, or free of some other allergen, please make a small sign that indicates so.
Beginning September 2, Pastor Chris will be preaching from the Book of 1 Samuel. Most likely, he will work through both 1-2 Samuel before finishing the study.
The session will meet on Thursday, September 13 at 6:30 pm.
We will have a prayer meeting on September 23 for our evening service.
We will meet at Redeemer OPC in Beavercreek on Sunday, September 30, 2018 for our evening worship service. That service begins at 5:30 pm.
An important note regarding our communion bread. At the last session meeting (August 9), the session unanimously agreed to change the communion bread to something (not yet determined) that is allergen free. In this case, the new bread will have neither gluten or dairy. It is reported in Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) that nearly 15 million people have food allergies, nine million adults and six million children. The prevalence of food allergies leading to anaphylaxis appears to be on the rise. And eight foods account for 90% of all food allergies: milk (certain protein strands), eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat (gluten), soy, fish, and shellfish. To be more sensitive to our own congregation and to others who may (by God’s grace) join us in the near and far future, the session has decided to make this change. We hope to express more compassion and care to those who have allergies or food sensitivities so that all of us together may have fellowship around the Lord’s Table. If you have either a suggestion for bread (or cracker) that is dairy free and gluten free or if you have other questions or feedback, please contact a session member. Thank you.
A request from Rev. Dr. L. Charles Jackson (formerly of Covenant OPC, Vandalia): Hello from Mbale, Uganda. I have spoken to a few folks here and there in the POH, but I wanted to put out the word more broadly and officially to the POH that we (Jacksons) will be needing a vehicle next year August 2019-Feb 2020 for our furlough. We will be staying in Dayton, Ohio. If anyone or any diaconate in the presbytery can help us find a reliable, decent car to use while on furlough we would appreciate it so much. It looks like we have a place to stay that is furnished so finding a car is the next important item. We’ll only be home 6-7 months and we plan to use a car to travel around Ohio, western PA as well as other states while visiting churches so it will need to be reliable. Thanks and God bless.
The 2018 Singles Retreat at the Machen Retreat and Conference Center (McDowell, VA) is September 28-30. Registration and other information is on the posted flyer.
The Presbytery of Ohio’s Women’s Retreat at Camp Akita (Logan, OH) is October 12-13. Flyers are available in the church lobby. In it, you’ll find all registration and other information. Please contact Sarah Taylor with questions.
A notice from the Stated Clerk of the POH: The installation service for Rev. Alan Dueck as an associate pastor for Grace Church Columbus is scheduled for Friday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. All are invited to attend.
