Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of January 25-31, 2016.
If you have a prayer request, please forward it to Pastor Chris to be included in the congregational prayer on Sunday morning or evening.
The Lord’s Day (January 31)
Our class is a twelve week video featuring Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters, professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson MS and teaching elder in the Mississippi Valley Presbytery (PCA). He’s written several books, including several on justification. The twelve week course is entitled, “The Life and Theology of Paul.”
Class # 10: Sanctification (Part 3). In our last two lessons, we looked at Paul’s teaching on sanctification from Romans 6 and 7, especially as it related to our union with Christ in His death and resurrection and how we live under His rule. In Christ, sin no longer reigns in our lives, but it does remain, leaving us to struggle against it throughout the entire Christian life. In this lesson, Dr. Waters opens up one more area in Paul’s thought related to sanctification. Specifically, he shows us that this Christian life of dying to sin and living to righteousness remains impossible without the ministry of the Holy Spirit. The work of the Spirit is absolutely indispensable to the victorious Christian life. We will look at His ministry in connection to His indwelling presence and role as the Spirit of adoption.
There are two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum, Show Me Jesus.
The healing of the lame man caused quite a stir and had serious repercussions. After Peter’s lengthy explanation, the Jewish authorities investigate. We’ll look at Acts 3:1-22, “The Name That Saves.”
Jesus begins an extended teaching on his and our relation to the Old Testament. We look at the first of several laws: Matthew 5:17-21, “Anger and Murder.”
Join us for prayer each Wednesday evening from 7-8 pm. Please send Pastor Chris any requests that you would like us to pray for.
Please join us and tell others about our three week study, “The Intimate Marriage” featuring a video series by Dr. R.C. Sproul. Fliers will be sent via email attachment and some will be available at the church. Our three week study will be Friday evenings, February 5, 12, and 19 beginning at 6:30 pm with dinner. We’ll have food and fellowship along with discussion. Single adults are invited to participate with us. Childcare will be provided.
Our next monthly fellowship lunch is Sunday, February 7 immediately after the service. The theme is Soup or Bowl of Salad!
The session invites all members to a town hall meeting on February 7 during the Sunday School hour (9:30-10:30 am). We would like to have a discussion about our current ministries, future ministries, and to tie these together with a discussion about our location. The question of our location was raised at the congregational meeting in December and the session has begun to deal with the question. We would like to hear from you – all communicant and non-communicant members. I hope you’ll join us on February 7 at 9:30 am.
All College and Career aged members are invited to a ski weekend in West Virginia on February 12-14. Fliers are available at the church. The host is Pastor Jonathan Hutchison of Reformation OPC in Morgantown. You can join other folks similar in age for a fun-filled skiing weekend. There is some cost for lift ticket and ski rental, but the church will provide room and board.
The men will meet on Saturday, February 13 at 8 am for study and breakfast. Read The Practice of Godliness chapter 6 (“Humility”) and bring something to share for breakfast.
The Session will meet again on Tuesday, February 16 at 6:30 pm.
Lobby beautification: The Deacons request volunteers to form a “decorating committee” for the lobby. The committee will have a modest budget to purchase some materials or supplies. The goal is to foster fellowship and make the area welcoming.
