Here are your Good Shepherd OPC announcements and worship helps for the week of December 14-20, 2015.
If you have a prayer request, please forward it to Pastor Chris to be included in the congregational prayer on Sunday morning or evening.
The Lord’s Day (December 20)
Our class is a twelve week video featuring Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters, professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson MS and teaching elder in the Mississippi Valley Presbytery (PCA). He’s written several books, including several on justification. The twelve week course is entitled, “The Life and Theology of Paul.”
Class # 4: Sin (Part 1). In the last lesson, we began with a summary of the gospel from 1 Corinthians 15. As we continue our studies, we will open up this message in more detail from Paul’s epistle to the Romans. In this lesson, we see that Paul begins with sin, a topic not dis- cussed much today. In Romans 1:16-17, arguably the thesis statement of Romans, Paul shows us that Christ’s righteousness is at the heart of the gospel. However, instead of speaking of this righteousness in detail right away, Paul discusses sin at length (Rom. 1:18). He knows we need to see our unrighteousness before we can see our need for the gift of righteousness in Christ.
There are two children’s classes; both use the Great Commission Publications curriculum, Show Me Jesus.
Since we have begun reflecting on the person and work of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, it would be helpful if spent some time considering the role of the Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christmas sermon will be from Luke 1:26-38, “The Spirit of Christ.”
The text is Matthew 5:3-6, entitled, “A Christian’s Relation to God.”
Join us for our prayer meeting each Wednesday evening from 7-8 pm. Send any requests to Pastor Chris so they may be incorporated into our prayer.
Lobby beautification: The Deacons request volunteers to form “decorating committee” for the lobby. The committee will have a modest budget to purchase some materials or supplies. The goal is to foster fellowship and make the area welcoming.
The women meet for Bible study each week to study the Gospel of Matthew. Contact Ananda Pienaar for time and place.
For all members who missed the Congregational Meeting, you may see Deacon Luke Denny for a copy of the proposed budget; there were no questions about it during our review. The session is set to approve it at their January meeting. One item of importance is that Elder Robert Taylor will have mandatory one year sabbatical as per our By-Laws. Although he remains ordained as an elder, he will be relieved of his duties for a year.
We will have our annual candlelight, Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols at 6 pm on December 24. Please consider inviting someone to hear the gospel presented in word and song.
Our next monthly fellowship lunch is Sunday, January 3 immediately after the service. The theme is comfort foods.
The next Men's breakfast and study is Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 8 am.
Pastor Chris will be on vacation from December 25 through January 1 with the Reverend Dr. Marc Clauson filling the pulpit in the morning service on December 27. There will be no evening service that day.
